Week 4

During the week I was learning more about strategies and playing more games. I did not watch a movie about chess like I planned. For almost a whole week, maybe longer, my dad and I have been playing one game on Chess Time. The app lets the game go on for an unlimited amount of time. Some of the strategies I learned about were sacrificing a piece for the purpose of letting other pieces gain better access to the board, taking control of the center of the board, and helpful placing of pawns such as three next to each other so they form a triangle. I also watched a video about some of world chess champion Garry Kasparov famous moves in a game. In the video about Garry Kasparov, the moves he and his opponent played were demonstrated on the screen. His famous moves were counter intuitive to me. That they were counter intuitive, and successful, is probably what made them famous. He showed the world a new way of doing something that hadn't been thought of before. I have been trying to pla...

Week 3

I have been reading and watching videos about chess strategy and doing online chess puzzles. The chess strategy lessons and chess puzzles are at www.chess.com where I set up a free account. The website has many articles related to chess, forums, blogs, clubs, and many other features. I feel like I am developing more of an appreciation for the game as I feel like I am becoming more of a challenge for my chess opponents to defeat.  There are two different kinds of chess puzzles that I have been doing on the website. One presents to you the board with the pieces arranged in a certain way, and some pieces may be missing. You are given the task of finding what is determined to be the most advantageous move or moves. This puzzle is engaging to me and motivates me more to develop my chess playing skills. The other puzzle presents to you the board with a few pieces arranged in a certain way. You are given the task of capturing pieces until one piece is left over (all pieces are the s...
I have been playing many games of chess throughout the week (mostly with the computer) and I lost every game. As I played, I noticed my lack of competitiveness in the game was due to not having any strategy. When playing, I try to forecast what the opponent may do many moves in advance. Many of my moves are random with no plan behind them. I plan to study chess strategies this week. When playing the computer, I thought how it was a marvel that I had an opponent that would play with me whenever I wanted, and, without delay, would make a move when it was its turn so I wouldn't have to wait. Knowing the computer playing against me was not perfect at chess, I thought it possible that the AI might make some irrational moves. This possibility did not discourage me from seeing the computer opponent as a friend, since a human make irrational moves too because perhaps they are not good at chess or just weren't focused on the game. Overall, the game has great potential for immersion des...
